Crohn’s Disease Treatment - Surgery Options
from:If you have Crohns disease then you are most likely aware of the medications used to treat the disease. Medications are a type of Crohns disease treatment that reduce inflammation and decrease pain. Medications alleviate Crohns disease, but do not cure it. Sometimes these medications are not enough. A person may suffer from an extreme or potent form of Crohns disease that requires surgery to alleviate the condition.
Surgery is a Crohns disease treatment that should not be taken lightly. Surgery has risks. The major benefit is that surgery has the potential to greatly reduce symptoms of Crohns disease for many sufferers. Each person must work with their doctor to determine whether or not surgery is the best option.
Why do some people require surgery while others do not? There are two major reasons. The first reason is that a Crohns disease sufferer may have extreme pain that they can no longer deal with. The second reason involves emergency or urgent situations.
An example of an emergency situation would be if you had an abscess. An abscess occurs when a great deal of white blood cells and bacteria pus leak out of the bowel. This pus can leak into the abdominal cavity. This leakage could cause infection of the abdomen as well as cause an infection in your blood stream. This is an emergency situation as it can cause death if not treated immediately.
An example of an urgent situation would be if you had cancer or fistulas. Cancer in the intestines and bowel can lead to death. Therefore, it is imperative to have surgery as soon as possible. Fistulas are abnormal channels between the bowel and other organs. These fistulas can empty into the bladder which can cause infection.
Other examples of emergency and urgent situations include obstructions, perforation, and severe bleeding in the intestines. You can experience a fatal infection if these conditions are not treated surgically.
Now lets look at people who choose to have surgery. This decision is not easy. Your doctor will guide you through the decision making process. Common reasons for choosing to have surgery include: potent unrelenting symptoms that are not alleviated by medicines, you cant participate in life due to symptoms of your condition, or stunted and incorrect development in children and teenagers.
What surgeries are available for Crohns disease? Typical Crohns disease treatment surgeries include: Colectomy, operations regarding abscesses and fistulas, and resection with anastomosis.
Resection with anastomosis is the most common Crohns disease treatment surgery. In this operation, the surgeon will remove the diseased portion of the bowel and rejoin it to the two remaining ends of the intestine.
Is surgery for Crohns disease 100% effective? Surgery will not cure Crohns disease, but will significantly reduce your symptoms. 2 out 3 Crohns disease sufferers will undergo surgery. Your doctor can provide specific examples of what to expect before, during, and after surgery. They will provide you literature and let you ask questions. Make sure that you understand all the risks before opting for surgery. If you do undergo surgery make certain that you follow all your doctors orders correctly.
