Quote of the Day: Fannie Farmer

"I certainly feel that the time is not far distant when a knowledge of the principles of diet will be an essential part of one's education. Then mankind will eat to live, be able to do better mental and physical work and disease will be less frequent."

Heartburn Cure - Natural Or Medication - Your Choice

from:

When families get together the occasion usually includes a meal. With it comes a some family favorites and a few of Americas classic recipes. From the family kitchens everywhere comes the temptation to over indulge. For many this will be a satisfied push away from the table and a reach for the antacids. Unable to get ready relief from unpleasant heartburn could spoil a wonderful time. But what if there was an alternative? One that was a natural and common sense approach?

When heartburn strikes - We eat too much. We dont chew our food. We dont exercise enough and the list goes on. When heartburn strikes we deal with it in the usual fashion. Millions of folks reach for relief in a bottle of antacid tablets. In general, a large meal will cause an almost immediate onset of indigestion, while even a small meal can be a problem if it contains a lot of spicy foods. When these attacks are mild and infrequent its easy to ignore the fact that your body is sending you a pain telegram as you push away from the table.

Doctors have known for years of the dangers of aspirin to the liver and kidneys, even at recommended dosage. There is a fine line between occasional usage for pain relief and use as a preventative medicine. Here the holistic healers have a good point - long term meds should be avoided unless your doctor says otherwise.

If you are not sure you have your heartburn problems pinpointed, youre not alone. Among the possibilities are caffeine based drinks - so much for tea, sodas and coffee. Well maybe not, if you know how. Other things that cause problems are alcohol and tobacco. Cigarettes are loaded with chemicals that quickly enters the bloodstream and go on to cause relaxation of the LES.

Knowing how the stomach works is the key. Knowing how stomach acid can be a good thing as long as it does what its supposes to do. If someone ever suggested a home remedy like eating a banana, you might wonder how that could have an effect on stomach pain. But bananas neutralize stomach acid and other things like regulate stress. Isnt worth a little effort to find out if there is an alternative to perpetual pill popping? If the most popular natural remedies dont work for you, keep looking.

If food is the problem then its possible that food is the cure. But can eating more food really be the answer to heartburn discomfort? Well not exactly. Eating in moderation is always the sensible course. But the point made is that food, the good food can have a effect as easily as bad food.
